Plant Elixir as a business recently moved down the fairest Cape and as a result, we have become increasingly interested in the just over 2600 vineyards our amazing country boasts (yes, we are also interested in the wine!).
It’s no secret the aforementioned is amongst the best in the world and we’ve increasingly learnt that some farmers make use of fulvic and humic acid in their grape growth cycles. But what we didn’t know was that it came in a different application!
We’ve long known that plants absolutely LOVE a foliar application of fulvic acid, but a study done a couple year back has shown that grapes equally love a good shower with our other star performer – humic acid (HA)!
The research was conducted in another exceptional wine producing country, Romania, in an area called Stefanesti, which is one of the most popular viticulture (the cultivation and harvesting of grapes) areas in the EU country.
The grapevines the study was done on were two popular white grape varieties, Feteasca Regala and Riesling Italian, and the research weas carried out of two years of harvest.
The result was that application once during the at the pre-bloom and once during the fruit set stages resulted in larger leaves and bigger fruit on both vines. The researchers concluded that a ratio of between 40ml and 50ml per litre had the best result.
They found that “the humic acids sprayed at different concentrations in this study influenced leaf development, physiological activity, yield, and berry quality attributes of grapevine”.

Grow forth and conquer!
